Facebook is changing its name to Meta

Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook’s new name will be “Meta”

At his company's Connect event on Thursday, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company's new name will be Meta. "We are a company that creates technology to connect," Zuckerberg explained. "We can finally put people at the center of our technology if we work together." And by working together, we can create a much larger creator economy."

"To reflect who we are and what we hope to build," he continues. He claims that the name Facebook does not fully encompass everything the company does now and is still closely associated with one product. "However, I hope that in time, we will be recognized as a metaverse company."

The Former Facebook Sign Now Reads Meta

In a blog post published Thursday, Zuckerberg stated that the company's corporate structure would not change, but how it reports financial results would. "We plan to report on two operating segments beginning with our results for the fourth quarter of 2021: Family of Apps and Reality Labs," he explained. "We also intend to begin trading on December 1 under the new stock ticker MVRS, which we have reserved. "The announcement made today has no bearing on how we use or share data."

Zuckerberg owns the Twitter handle meta (whose tweets are currently protected) and meta.com, which now redirects to a Facebook welcome page outlining the changes. Previously, the site redirected to meta.org, a biomedical research discovery tool developed by the Chan Zuckerberg Science Initiative. That's a component of the philanthropic arm Zuckerberg co-founded in 2015 with his physician wife, Priscilla Chan. The group announced in a Medium post on Thursday that Meta.org will be decommissioned on March 31st, 2022.

Why is FB changing its name to Meta?

Facebook Inc. FB 2.10 percent's decision to rename itself Meta reflects the company's perception of growth opportunities beyond its namesake social-media platform. The audio tag is not supported by your browser.

The name was chosen to reflect the key product that Zuckerberg hopes will represent Facebook – now Meta: the metaverse, the name for a shared online 3D virtual space that a number of companies are interested in creating as a sort of future version of the internet.
